There are not clear markings for directions, and there is no check-in area. We happened upon a ranger who provided a map of the area for us, which was very kind. He saw us go around in a circle and drive to a dead end... It was clear we didn't know where things were.
Very hard to hunt lots of ruts in fields and brush very heavy.not for the faint at heart
As an armature camper, I'd say this area is forgiving but eye-opening about how to improve for future situations. I'M VERY GLAD I BROUGHT A PORTABLE GAS STOVE. It made the experience a whole lot better than it probably would have been... We brought a cast-iron pot, but we couldn't figure out how to put it on the fire without making the water taste like ash. You live and learn.
This place is naturally beautiful, but the primitive restrooms (literally holes in the ground) and large number of mosquitoes around restrooms make it a bit stressful.
I think if you really took advantage of everything here, you could really enjoy it. It's all free fun. There are shooting ranges and campgrounds. We were getting the hang of traveling through the area after only a day there. I wish we could have stayed longer, but I did worry about the viability of such an idea. The only water on site is non-potable, so you can't use it for anything unless you purify it. That adds another dimension to what kind of gear you need to bring, whether it's water or a filter and a stove.
This is a great free camping area. The spots are big enough for large RV's. Tent spots are for smaller tents.
The forest is near an airport, so you'll hear a couple planes.
We went here to walk trails and go camping. I was very dissappointed in the trails and camping area. The trails were clearly made by bulldozer and surrounding area was a mess with broken trees and forest. It was not relaxing to see the damaged areas. The camping area was out in the open and seemed strange. When we camp and hike we like clean succluded areas.
Communication was severely limited by spotty cell reception. I had to walk a quarter mile into the woods to get a signal.
Beautiful place! A little piece of heaven for a walk or a weekend camp. No trash! Lets keep it that way!
